Sungshin Women's University – English Writing and Conversation Instructors
Spring Semester 2013 – Seoul, Korea
The Department of General Education at Sungshin Women's University is looking for friendly, experienced, committed and qualified non-tenure track full time instructors. We currently have 20 native instructors from 6 different countries and we are looking to add valuable members to our team.
1. Position
- full-time instructor
2. Qualifications
- Must be native English speakers from a visa compliant country.
- Must have a BA with 4 years of university teaching experience (or 8 years in a public middle/.high school) & ideally be in the process of obtaining an MA or a higher degree in TESOL, Education, Linguistics or other English-related subjects –OR– must have an MA with at least 2 year of university teaching experience (or 4 years in a public middle/high school)
- Successful applicants will be expected to develop and teach a topic-based English class.
3. Duties
- Teach a minimum of 12 credit hours per week of our department's two mandatory freshmen courses – English 1 (Speaking & Listening) and English 2 (Reading & Writing) – and up to 15 maximum hours depending on semester demand and scheduling (hours taught over 12 are paid as overtime at a rate of 22,000 won/hour for daytime classes and 28,000 won/hour for evening classes).
- Participate in course & materials development (particularly textbook evaluation) and maintain a minimum of 9 office hours each week (for consulting with students, class preparation, marking, grading and meetings) which are set on Mondays and Wednesdays 1:00-5:30 pm.
- Be responsible for your assigned administration duty/duties during the semester
- Participate in all faculty meetings, seminars, school festivals, school ceremonies, and workshops including the planning meeting 1 week prior to the start of the semester
- Conduct mentoring sessions with enrolled students during office hours
- Serve 2 hours/week in our Global Lounge interacting with students in English in an informal, relaxed atmosphere
4. Terms of Contract
- 1 year contract which can be renewed based on student evaluation results and other performance criteria deemed important by the Dean and department management
- Annual salary will be approximately 35 million to 41 million won (pre-overtime) depending on educational background and university-level teaching experience (fixed pay brackets have been established)
- No on- or off- campus housing or housing allowance is offered
- Paid vacation – 10 weeks in summer and 10 weeks in winter
- Private health insurance coverage
- Korea Teachers' Pension Fund (KTPF) enrollment
- Shared office with 5 other professors. Every instructor is provided with a desk and computer.

– If not already done and applying for an E-2 visa, notarized copies of all diplomas should be apostilled* (or verified by the Korean Consulate in the country of your nationality or verified by the Korean Council for University Education) and ready to submit to immigration. *D. Copy of national criminal background check apostilled or verified after September 1, 2012 if applying for an E-2 visa. PLEASE STATE THE STATUS OF THIS PROCESS IN YOUR RESUME/COVER LETTER.
E. Copy of transcripts for undergraduate and graduate degree(s)
F. Copy of any TEFL/TESOL or other relevant certificates
G. At least two letters of recommendations including referees' contact information (can be in English or Korean)
H. Copy of official documentation of previous employment (°æ·ÂÁõ¸í¼­)
I. Copy of passport photo page
J. Copy of foreigner registration card (both front and back)
K. A 15 week sample syllabus for students with over 700 TOEIC scores (3 hours of class time per week meeting either once or twice a week) – this should include a course title, recommended textbooks/materials, basic class content and assessment methods. The class content can be anything that you think is suitable.
L. A description of specified teaching philosophy and methodology how you can contribute to the ELS Writing and Conversation classes at Sungshin Women's University.
*E1/F2/F5 visa holders do NOT need to submit (c) apostilled diploma copies or (d) a national criminal background check. All other documents are required.
Applicants who pass the initial screening process will be invited for a short demonstration lesson and interview.
N.B. Email applications will NOT be accepted and Skype interviews are NOT possible. If you are not living in Korea and will not be able to do either a demo lesson or an interview in person, please do not apply.
