About Teaching in Korea

As a teacher in the public school system you are an employee of government school board bodies, therewith enjoying very good employment conditions. Being well paid and housed for free, teachers have the ability to live well and save money at the same time. You can expect to spend anywhere between $500 - $1000 on cost of living: food, transportation and going out, depending on how splurge you want to go and whether you're in an urban or rural area. This means you can save more than half of your income to take home with you.
As a foreign teacher you pay very little in taxes, between 4-7% (Canadian and Irish citizens only - citizens of other countries don't pay any tax). As per Korean labour law, upon completion of your contract you will receive 1 month's pay for every year you have worked for your employer. This is on top of the entry and exit allowance of 1.3 million Won (about $1200) that you receive to cover your travel expenses.
