George Mason University employs a distributed campus structure with a single academic administration for the entire university. Each of Mason¡¯s academic campuses has distinctive features or academic programs not duplicated elsewhere in its campus structure, except for convenience.
Mason Korea, the Songdo Global University Campus of George Mason University, is the first international setting for Mason¡¯s distributed campus and academic programs. Mason Korea is an integral partner with the university¡¯s current campuses located at Fairfax, Arlington, and Prince William, Virginia, and it directly implements Mason¡¯s longstanding emphasis on East Asia, generally, and Korea, specifically. The Songdo campus will amplify Korean collaborations in education, research, and economic development, expand Mason¡¯s potential to recruit students internationally, and will provide new global opportunities for students and faculty at Mason¡¯s other three academic campuses.
Central to the success of Mason Korea is the staffing of key university and program positions. In this regard, Mason Korea seeks qualified applicants for a full-time instructional faculty position with a specialization in teaching English as a Second Language. The person who fills this position will perform the following duties at the Mason Korea, Songdo Global University Campus at Incheon, Korea:
- Teach 1-2 four-week intensive English courses prior to each term
- Teach English for Academic Purposes (EAP) support course for students enrolled in COMM 100
- Teach English for Academic Purposes (EAP) support course for students enrolled in ENGH 100
- Actively participate in curriculum development committee meetings
- Actively participate in assessment committee meetings
- Complete language assessments for Mason-Songdo students at the end of each four-week intensive English course (including proficiency reports for students and institutional reporting to Mason admissions)
- Conduct workshops for Mason-Songdo faculty to discuss specific challenges that ESL students face in academic courses and ways for modifying instruction/assessments in order to maintain standards while meeting the linguistic needs of the Songdo student population
- Serve on Mason-Songdo academic/advisory committee in order to address and report on Mason-Songdo student and faculty issues particular to language learning/support
- Establish an ESL tutoring program for Mason-Songdo students, offering at least 10 hours/week of tutoring (1 hour tutoring sessions/each)
Required Qualifications:
- Faculty member should have an MA in TESOL/applied linguistics or a related field with a minimum of 3-5 years teaching experience in a post-secondary or higher education setting
- Faculty member should have prior experience teaching EAP courses, advanced-level ESL reading/writing, listening/speaking, and academic study skills
- Faculty member should have prior experience assessing students' English language skill levels for sufficiency for following instruction and participating in university coursework
- Faculty member must be a native English speaker or have native-speaker English proficiency; knowledge of another language (preferred)
- Faculty member must be available for periodic travel to the Mason campus in Fairfax, VA, USA, for orientation/coordination/liaison
