Directly under the jurisdiction of China's Ministry of Education, SDU is one of the most prestigious and time-honored universities in China. The university proper is in Jinan, the capital city of Shandong Province, which lies on China's east coast and the lower reaches of the Yellow River. Covering a total area of over 1,000 acres, SDU is comprised of six campuses in various parts of the picturesque city of springs, Jinan. It encompasses 31 academic schools and departments, 3 affiliated hospitals, 12 teaching hospitals, and a graduate school.
About the School of Foreign Languages and Literature
The School of Foreign Languages and Literature of SDU has a history of nearly 80 years. It has nine departments, including the English Department, the Applied English Department, and the Chinese-English and English-Chinese Translation Department.
Teaching Positions
Six teaching positions are available for Sept. 2012- July 2013 in the English Department, the Applied English Department, and the Translation Department. These positions are open to native English speakers to teach speaking and writing to English majors.
There are altogether 28 classes, 25-30 students in each, in the English Department, the Applied English Department, and the Translation Department. The courses taught by the prospective foreign teachers are as follows: English speaking for freshmen and sophomore students, English writing for junior and senior student, basic writing for freshmen and sophomore students in the Translation Department, and advanced speaking for junior and senior students in the Translation Department.
Each teacher generally teaches 14 hours, 4-6 hours of writing and 6-8 hours of speaking in the first semester of the 2012-2013 school year, and 12 hours, 4-6 hours of writing and 4-6 hours of speaking in the second semester. He or she is also expected to offer guidance to students attending English contests and supervise the thesis writing of senior students.

Course Description:
Spoken English: Spoken English consists of four semesters of instruction during the freshmen and sophomore years. Systematic instruction aims to provide students with the ability to express ideas effectively using English.
English Writing: English Writing in general aims at helping English majors to improve their English proficiency through writing. Freshmen and sophomore students are expected to organize grammatically correct, logically sound and rhetorically-effective writings after systematic training. At the same time, they are expected to learn to appreciate and evaluate literary or academic writings. Junior students are expected to learn, develop, and further practice forms of academic writing such as arguments and analyses, as well as to explore forms of essays, such as personal essays, literary essays, and political or social commentaries etc. As for senior students, in addition to the aims mentioned above, teachers are also expected to provide students with relevant instructions in creating voice, matching style to audience, and creating forms that accomplish rhetorical aims.

Benefits and living conditions
Candidates with a two-semester contract shall be provided with the following.
1. Monthly salary ranging from 5000-6000 Chinese Yuan, according to the job applicant's educational background, teaching and training experiences.
2. Free Accommodation furnished with 1) a family style apartment with private bathroom and kitchen, or 2) hotel style apartment with private bathroom, but shared kitchen and laundry facility. Accommodations are assigned consistent with convenience of work location, as well as availability.
3. The cost of a round trip flight of economy class between home city and Jinan.
4. The Health Insurance Plan for Foreign Teachers comes at the complete expense of Shandong University while expenses over the reimbursement limit are the responsibilities of the covered foreign instructors. It is strongly recommended that foreign instructors come to China with extra health insurance that also covers the cost for emergency, hospitalization as well as treatment for acute diseases.
5. Other benefits: 200 Chinese yuan monthly subsidy for water and electricity; travel allowance of 1100 yuan for each semester; Free pickup service in Jinan for first arrival and last departure; organized cultural activities and excursions in and out of Jinan during the year
