We are currently looking for native English-speaking non-tenure professors, who preferably reside in Korea, to teach credit freshman and sophomore conversation classes at Cheongju University, beginning March 1st, 2013. Both credit and non-credit English courses are available to be taught.
1. POSITION DETAILS
The contract requires 12 credit class hours and 2 office hours (4 working days per week), with the opportunity to teach up to 6 hours of overtime (for a maximum of 18 hours per week) when extra classes are available. The overtime programs have differential pay rates ranging from 20,000 to 30,000 per hour.
In addition, the position offers approximately four and a half months of paid vacation (about nine weeks between each semester). Faculty members are free to leave Korea and do whatever they wish after inputting the grades and dealing with grade appeals.
There is also an opportunity for extra hours, teaching auxiliary English classes at the Language Education Center (LEC). The LEC runs a variety of conversation-type classes and intensive English camps for university students, adults and children. Working a camp or these classes is NOT mandatory.
2. SALARY
The annual base salary will be 32,680,000 won before Korean tax (2.723 million won/month). As you will be receiving a private university pension, there is no severance pay offered due to the stipulations in the private pension plan.
3. QUALIFICATIONS
Please read the mandatory qualifications carefully as those who do not possess the required qualifications WILL NOT be considered for a position. Furthermore, hagwon/academy/institute experience is NOT considered valid working experience by our university (only primary, secondary and tertiary schooling). Finally, we encourage all majors and women to apply for the non-tenure professor positions.
The qualifications for our non-tenure professor position are as follows:
Mandatory Qualifications
- B.A. Degree and at least 4 years of teaching experience (university/college level strongly preferred).
Preferred Qualifications
- M.A. Degree and at least 2 year of teaching experience (university/college level strongly preferred).
- Teaching certificates (e.g. TESOL/TEFL/TESL/CELTA)
- Currently residing in Korea
(*Note: Any experience accrued within the elementary, middle or high school system is pro-rated by our university based on the number of hours worked and level taught.)
4. BENEFITS
- Non-shared housing is provided by the university (the professor is responsible for paying all utilities).
- Private Medical Insurance and Private Pension Plan are also provided (half paid by the university and half paid by the professor).
- A shared office with personal computer and Internet are also provided.
- Approximately four and half months of paid vacation.
5. CONTRACT PERIOD
Two years with a maximum of two contract renewals; six years total.

6. DOCUMENTS REQUIRED
As a result of the ever-changing visa policies in Korea, please be aware that Cheongju University is not responsible for any alterations to the documentation requirements for your visa. Each individual applicant is responsible for knowing the current conditions and requirements of his/her visa type. We will try our best to answer any questions that applicants may have, however the responsibility lies with the applicant to ensure the proper documentation is submitted to the university and immigration officials.
As such, Cheongju University and the Korean Immigration Office require an apostilled federal criminal background check, an apostilled copy of your diploma, and a health report. Note that in some countries a federal background check can take up to twelve weeks to complete. If this is your first visa, you must do an interview at an embassy in your home country. Visa transfers require a letter of release and must be obtained from one¡¯s current Korean employer. Failure to provide relevant paperwork in a timely manner may be grounds to cease the application process.
